TCRS's office in Dar es Salaam serves as the headquarters for our activities in Tanzania. In addition to ensuring the smooth implementation of those activities by providing critical logistical support to project offices, coordinating the procurement of equipment and goods, and liaising with donors, partner organizations, and government agencies, the team in Dar es Salaam is also ideally situated to focus on advocating for refugee rights and to provide support to urban refugees and vulnerable groups.
Aid to Urban Refugees and Vulnerable Groups
Although the majority of Tanzania's refugees can be found in the various camps and settlements located throughout the country, urban refugees still constitute a significant population. For many of these individuals, the decision to move to the city was sanctioned by the Government of Tanzania, while others have made their own way to Dar es Salaam, often influenced by forces beyond their control. Regardless of their particular circumstances, the fact remains that they all still deserve to be treated with the respect and dignity that is the right of every human being. In recognition of this - and of the likelihood that these refugees do not have access to the basic goods and services that are provided in the camps - TCRS considers its work with these refugees an important part of its mission.
To this end, TCRS provides urban refugees with a variety of different forms of assistance, ranging from counseling services and medical care to transportation, funds for school fees, and distributions of donated non-food items. The TCRS Counseling Officer also organizes regular visits to hospitals and prisons in order to speak with refugee patients and inmates about their specific situations and problems.
Action by Churches Together Forum Tanzania
TCRS's Dar es Salaam office also acts as the lead coordinating agent for Action by Churches Together (ACT) Forum Tanzania (AFTZ). Together with the Christian Council of Tanzania (CCT) and other AFTZ members, TCRS plays an important role in coordinating and planning for disaster risk management and relief interventions.
